Is this you?

Your water tastes or smells like a pool, at every tap. It takes out the chlorine taste and smell that makes Phoenix water taste like a pool, at every faucet and shower.

What’s included

A carbon filter tank where water enters your home, so every tap gets filtered water. It does not soften water. Smaller cartridge filters cost less up front but need new cartridges more often.

What can change the price

  • Most prices here assume your home already has a softener hookup (installers call it a loop): two capped pipes, usually in the garage or next to the water heater. If yours doesn't, adding one starts at about $600 to $800 at the 4 Phoenix installers that publish this price, and can reach $3,500 when the plumbing is hard to get to.
  • Installers size systems by how many people live in the house: usually 1 to 3, 3 to 5, or 5 to 8. The prices here are for the smallest standard size, so a bigger household pays more.
  • A smaller cartridge filter costs less up front but needs new cartridges more often.

What it costs to run

  • Carbon filter: the carbon inside a whole-house tank lasts about 5 to 10 years, and replacement carbon costs about $260 to $350.
  • Cartridge filters need new cartridges every 6 to 12 months, from about $17 for a single cartridge to about $135 for a set.
